Gaudi Sidewalk Colorwork Crochet Blanket

Sharing is caring!

Gaudi’s Sidewalk in Barcelona is world-renowned, and this Gaudi Sidewalk Crochet Blanket brings the artwork to life in your own home. Each colorwork hexagon in this blanket mimics the sidewalk tiles and fit together to form a starfish, ammonites, and algae. All of these are symbolism of nature and use the Catalan architect style.

If you love colorwork, this free crochet pattern is truly a worthwhile project. If you aren't ready to dive into a blanket pattern, check out the Vine Colorwork Crochet Sock or the Forest Brooks Crochet Beanie Hat.

On my first trip to Barcelona I could not stop looking at my feet. My husband was trying to get my attention, and a man walked by and spit on the ground. Not being able to resist, I gave that man a dirty look. How could he not see the beautiful art at his feet?

I was enamored as I studied the way each hexagon and line came together. Alone the hexagon seemed cryptic, but together it was magnificent. I wanted to take this piece of Barcelona home.

What you'll love about this blanket pattern.

  • Make in Segments - Since each hexagon is crocheted independently, this project feels less overwhelming by working just one piece at a time.
  • Colorwork Challenge - If you are looking for a stimulating and intermediate crochet project, this is for you.
  • Cozy & Gorgeous - Not only is this a work of art, it's a useful cozy blanket.

About Antoni Gaudi

Antoni Gaudi (1852-1926) was a Spanish architect. He is known for his Catalan Modernism and one of a kind style. However, most of his works reside in Barcelona, Spain.

Much of his inspiration derives from nature, which he uniquely ties to modernism. His most famous works is the Sagrada Familia Cathedral.

Gaudi’s design which influenced me the most was his stone tiled sidewalk. Right away the hexagon shapes spoke to me. It’s a mathematical shape that is often found in nature and uniquely fits together. In this design every rotation forms a new image at the vertices representing the sun, earth, and sea.

How Long Does It Take To Make This Crochet Blanket?

Wanting to crochet an homage to Gaudi’s Sidewalk and making it a reality were two different things. It surprised me how long it took to get the exact gauge and stitch sizing for the correct dimensions. And then the time it took to create the piece.

Did it get boring? Not at all.
I worked on this project one piece at a time at just under five months. It wasn’t the only WIP on my couch, so I would pick it up when I wanted and do a hexagon here and there. One of my favorite things about working in pieces is the small goals that don’t feel overwhelming.

This colorwork blanket is great for travel because you don't need to take a whole blanket, just work on one hexagon piece at a time. This is a similar construction to the The Perfect Blanket For Bee Lovers.

How to Crochet A Gauge Swatch
Working a gauge swatch will let you know if you will have the correct sizing for this pattern. A gauge swatch helps you practice the stitches used in this project and improve your stitch work for a flawless look.

Construction
This colorwork crochet blanket is made in large hexagon pieces, then stitched together. Lastly border pieces and a solid border is created.

Important Notes

  • After the end of each row turn and ch 1. The ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
  • Blocking pieces before joining is recommended.
  • Since there is a wrong side and a right side to the hexagon pieces, I used a combination of intarsia and carrying yarn across the back for the color work. Experiment and see what works best for you. Lining the back of the blanket is an option to hide any yarn strands that were carried.

Assembly & Finishing Touches

To prepare each hexagon shape blocking is recommended. Find a large table or space to lay out each piece of the blanket in order as in pictured above.

To stitch the pieces together we will be first working in vertical rows, and then stitches the rows together with slip stitches. For a flat and seamless look, slip stitch in back loops only. A video on how to get a great join can be found here:

How To Care For Your Crochet Blanket

The journey of creating a handmade crochet blanket like the Gaudi Blanket is not just about the final product, but also about the love, dedication, and creativity poured into every stitch. As you wrap yourself or your loved ones in its warmth, you're enveloped in a sense of accomplishment and coziness that can't be replicated by mass-produced items. You can never have enough crochet blankets in my humble opinion. To ensure your Gaudi Blanket remains a cherished heirloom for years to come, here are some essential care tips:

  1. Gentle Washing: Hand wash your crochet blanket in cool water with a mild detergent. Avoid wringing or twisting the blanket, as this can distort its shape.
  2. Flat Drying: Lay the blanket flat on a towel to air dry. Avoid hanging it, as this can cause stretching or distortion.
  3. Storage: When not in use, store your crochet blanket in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent fading or damage.
  4. Handle with Care: While crochet blankets are durable, they can snag on sharp objects or jewelry. Handle your blanket with care to avoid unnecessary damage.
  5. Mend Promptly: If you notice any loose threads or minor damage, mend them promptly to prevent further unraveling or deterioration.

By following these simple care tips, you can ensure that your Gaudi Blanket remains as beautiful and cozy as the day it was finished, continuing to bring warmth and comfort for generations to come. So, snuggle up, enjoy its beauty, and cherish the memories woven into every stitch.
