How To Simplify The Crochet Basket

Want a pretty basket for storage? This doesn't have to be just made as a bunny. You can crochet the base basket and stop there for a beautiful crochet basket. I still like to re-enforce with plastic canvas for the shape. It's a great basket for storing your yarn and a beautiful home decor piece.

This doesn't just need to be used around Easter. This basket can be fun to use on Halloween as well for collecting all those yummy treats. And if storage baskets are your thing, check out the Teton Crochet Basket Pattern.

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing onto the basket. Stuff lightly with fiberfill.

Assembly of the Easter Basket
To reinforce the basket, use plastic canvas. Place the round piece of plastic canvas into the bottom of the basket. Cut strips of canvas 26 squares wide (4” or 10cm) to line the sides of the basket. Overlap the strips on the inside of the basket. Using a yarn needle and Color A yarn, sew the top of the plastic lining to the last row of the basket.

For the handle, cut a strip of canvas 22 inches long (59cm) and 10 squares wide (1 ½” or 3.8cm). If longer canvas cannot be found, overlap smaller strips of canvas and stitch together with yarn to obtain length.
Slide the strip of canvas into the yarn sleeve and stitch ends closed.
Sew handle to inside of basket on either side approx. 1 inch from top. Sew through all layers securing tightly and hiding the stitching on the outside.

Assembly of the Legs
Lightly stuff with fiberfill and sew legs to the BLO round of the basket body. Place two legs on either side of the bunny head on the front and 2 legs equally apart towards the back of the basket. Make sure the legs will hang down when the basket is picked up.

Assembly of the Nose
With a yarn needle and Color C, embroider a triangle nose on the bunny. See the video for another option of stitching on a triangle nose.
I found I stink at embroidery on this yarn, so I found an alternative mock embroidery nose:
Cut a piece of plastic canvas or stiff paper the height of the nose. Tie yarn and then wrap loosely around about 8 times. Slide needle through the bottom of the wrapped yarn, pull tight and tie a knot on the back. Gently slide the pieces of yarn off the canvas and loosely tie a knot on back top of the nose. Stitch the nose to the bunny head and add a vertical line at the bottom of the nose.

Bunny Tail Options
You can purchase a faux fur pompom, or make your own with the Quick Faux Fur Pompom Tutorial.
Another option is to make a yarn pompom. Using an extra-large pompom maker, create a full tail keeping the strands used to tie the center of the pompom long. Use these strands to weave through the top back of the basket and tie the tail in place.

Easter Bunny Ears
Sew ears to the top of head approx. 1 ½ inches apart.
This Basket can also be made without handles for a nice storage basket, or plain without a character.

Finishing the Basket
Weave in all ends, place the circular plastic canvas in bottom, and have fun finding those Easter eggs!

As you wrap up your delightful Bunny Easter Basket project, don't forget to consider its care and storage to ensure its longevity. To keep your crocheted masterpiece in pristine condition, consider placing a layer of tissue paper inside the basket before storing any Easter goodies. This will help maintain its shape and protect it from potential damage.

Additionally, store the basket in a cool, dry place to prevent any moisture-related issues. If the basket needs a little freshening up next Easter, a gentle hand wash with mild detergent and air drying should do the trick. By following these simple tips, you can preserve the charm of your crocheted Bunny Easter Basket for seasons to come, making each Easter celebration even more special with your handmade creation. And there are even more Easter basket patterns to enjoy such as the Dinosaur Crochet Easter Basket and the Dragon Easter Basket. Happy crocheting!
