Removable stitch markers if needed
Yarn needle to weave in ends
Scissors
2 Buttons for fastening straps for larger cape
Felt for optional initial or letter, color of choice
Felt glue or sewing needle and thread

Yarn:

Any worsted medium 4 yarn will work. Red Heart Super Saver and Red Heart Soft were used in example photos.

For the picture instruction examples, I used Color A-Red Heart Super Saver Black, Color B- Red Heart Super Saver Grey Heather, Color C- Red Heart Super Saver Perfect Pink

For Example, on baby above: Color A-Red Heart Super Saver Light Blue, Color B-Red Heart Super Saver Tea Leaf, Color C- Red Heart Super Saver White

Approx. 75 yards

ch- Chain
st- Stitch
sl st- Slip Stitch
sc- Single Crochet

4 x 4 inch swatch = 9 rows x 15 stitches

Cape: Length= 9 inches, Width= 7 inches
Hat: Length= 5 inches, Width= 6 ½ inches

Notes:

Change hook sizes if needed to meet gauge. Yarn can be substituted with a yarn of the same weight. The beginning chain does not count as stitch. When joining rounds, join to the first dc and start the next round in the same stitch.

Superhero Baby Crochet Hat

Round 1: Start with color A, ch 2 and dc 11 into a magic ring (magic circle), join and ch 2 (11)

Round 2: dc 2 in each stitch around, join and ch 2 (22)

Round 3: dc 2 in first stitch, dc in next stitch, repeat around, join and ch 2 (33)

Round 4: dc 2 in first stitch, dc in next 2 stitches, repeat around, join and ch 2 (44)

Round 5: dc in each stitch around, join and ch 2 (44)

Round 6: dc in each stitch around, join and at end of round change to Color B, ch 2 (44)

Round 7: dc in each stitch around, join and at end of round change to Color C, ch 2 (44)

Round 8: dc in each stitch around, join and at end of round change to Color A, ch 2 (44)

Round 9: dc in each stitch around, join and ch 2 (For a 0-3 month size, repeat this round one more time) (44)

Round 10: dc in each stitch around, join and fasten off, weave in all ends (44)

Superhero Baby Crochet Cape

Row 1: Starting with Color A, Fsc 14, turn and ch 2 (alternate for this row is to chain 16, dc in 3rd chain from hook and across) (14)

Row 2-3: dc in each stitch across. Turn and ch  2 (14)

Row 4: 2 dc in first stitch, dc in next 12, 2 dc in last stitch. Change to Color B, turn and ch 2 (16)

Row 5: dc in each stitch across. Turn and ch  2 (16)

Row 6: 2 dc in first stitch, dc in next 14, 2 dc in last stitch, turn and ch 2 (18)

Row 7: dc in each stitch across. Turn and ch  2 (18)

Row 8: 2 dc in first stitch, dc in next 16, 2 dc in last stitch, turn and ch 2 (20)

Row 9: dc in each stitch across. Turn and ch  2 (20)

Row 10: 2 dc in first stitch, dc in next 18, 2 dc in last stitch, turn and ch 2 (22)

Row 11: dc in each stitch across. Turn and ch  2 (22)

Row 12: dc in each stitch across, change to Color C, turn and ch 2 (22)

Rows 13-14: dc in each stitch across. Turn and ch  2 (22)

Row 15: dc in each stitch across, change to Color A, turn and ch 2 (22)

Row 16: dc in each stitch across. Turn and ch  2 (22)

Row 17: dc2tog, dc in next 18, dc2tog, turn and ch 2 (20)

Row 18: dc2tog, dc in next 16, dc2tog, turn and ch 2. (18)

Continue to hdc around the outer edge of the cape, join with first, fasten off and weave in all ends.

Oval

Round 1: Using Color C, chain 6.3dc in the 3rd ch from hook, dc in next 2, 5dc in the last chain, and work down the other side. dc in next 2, 2dc in the beginning ch space. Join and ch 2 (14)

Round 2: 2dc in each of the next 2 stitches, dc in next 4, 2dc in each of the next 3, dc in next 4, 2dc in the last stitch. Join and ch 2 (20)

Round 3: 2 DC in each of the next 4 stitches, DC in next 4, 2 DC in each of the next 6, DC in next 4, 2 DC in each of the last 2 stitches. Join and fasten off, leaving a long tail for stitching onto cape.

Using a tapestry needle, sew the oval logo on the cape in the middle of the Color B portion.

Belt Loops

Using about a yard of black yarn attach to the cape and make 6 loops over the three Color C rows between stitches 6-7 from the edge of the cape. Weave to the other side of the cape and repeat. 

Optional Spikes/Ears

Row 1: Leaving a long tail for sewing onto the hat, chain 9. sc in 2nd chain from hook and across, turn and ch 1. (8)

Row 2: sc2tog, sc in the next 4, sc2tog, turn and ch 1 (6)

Row 3: sc in each stitch across, turn and ch 1 (6)

Row 4: sc2tog, sc in next 2, sc2tog, turn and ch 1 (4)

Row 5: sc2tog twice, turn and ch 1 (2)

Row 6: sc2tog

Continue to sc evenly around the outside of the spike, fasten off and weave in the end. Using a tapestry needle, sew ears onto hat between rows 2-4. To help shape spikes, curve the base into a ‘C’ shape. Weave in ends.

Felt Letter

Using the font Adobe Garamond Pro Bold at size 175, print the letter of choice. Use this template as a guide to cut out your letter logo in felt. Use felt glue or a needle and thread to attach a letter to the center of the crochet oval. The example below, B for baby!
