The inspiration for The Traveling Vine Knit Shawl, of course, came from exploring the world. Traveling has always been something I’ve wanted to do. I mean, don’t we all? But for a few years there, my family was growing, which meant less traveling.

Then earlier this year, my husband and I were able to tour some of Europe for our anniversary. It was a dream trip for sure, and the best part was the inspiration for future designs.

The Traveling Vine Crochet Shawl by Briana K Designs

This knit shawl is a mimic of a crochet version. The unique cable wraps and travels up one side of the shawl just like a vine twists and turns as it grows up a fence. I hope you enjoy this pattern as much as I have.

A special note on yarn: Because this is not a fitted item, any yarn can be used. It increases on one side, therefore, it can be worked until the desired depth and half of the length is created, then decreased for the second half.

The Traveling Vine Knit Shawl Notes:

This pattern has a simplistic repeat while increasing every four rows on the left edge. While working this up, keep aware of when you reach half of your yarn so you can start decreasing.

Due to the construction of this pattern, any yarn can be used, it will change size slightly, but that’s the fun of exploring with non-fitted items. My shawl is extra wide, feel free to make yours the width and height you prefer.

Special Stitches:

There are some combination of increasing and decreasing stitches in this pattern to achieve the infinity cable look. There is a video below to assist with the following stitches:

• M1R: Make one right, with LH needle, pick up cross-strand between 2 sts from back to front, knit lifted strand. One stitch increased leaning to the right.

• M1L: Make one left, with LH needle, pick up cross-strand between 2 sts from front to back, knit lifted strand through back loop. One stitch increased leaning to the left.

• Center double increase: (increase 1 to 3): k1 through the back and front loop then slip the stitches off LH needle and onto RH needle, insert LH needle behind vertical strand between the 2 sts just made and knit through the front. Two stitches increased.

• 5-to-1 st decrease: This will be done on a wrong side row, the working yarn will not be needed and can be dropped while completing this decrease.
Slip the next 3 stitches to right needle, *pass 2nd st on right needle over 1st (which is the center st), slip center stitch back to left needle; pass 2nd st on left needle over the center stitch*; repeat from * to * once more. Leave the center stitch on the left needle, pick up yarn and purl center stitch. Four stitches decreased.

2/2 LCP: Two Over Two Left Cross Purl:
Slip two stitches to cable needle at front, p2, k2 from cable needle.

2/2 RCP: Two Over Two Right Cross:
Slip two stitches to cable needle at back, k2, kp from cable needle.

2/1 LCP: Two Over One Left Cross:
Slip two to cable needle at front, p1, k2 from cable needle.

2/1 RCP: Two Over One Right Cross:
Slip one stitch to cable needle at back, k2, p1 from cable needle.

2/1/2 LC: Two Over One Over Two Left Cross Purl:
Slip three stitches to cable needle at the front, k2, slip left stitch to left-hand needle and p1, k2 from cable needle.

Hi! I'm Briana K

Hello, my fellow crafters!
I feel we are all natural-born artists nourishing our talents throughout our entire lives.

I've been fortunate enough to have found a home in the fiber arts community where my passions for crochet, knit, and cross stitch can grow.

I'm a Florida girl for the past decade, but before that, I lived in the Rocky Mountains.
While I love nature and hiking, I've grown extremely fond of the sunny beaches. Read More…
