How To Crochet the Moss Stitch + Free Washcloth Pattern

Do you want to learn how to crochet the moss stitch? This post will walk you through the basic steps of the crochet moss stitch and also includes a video tutorial.

And why not make something useful while learning the stitch, right? We will practice this stitch by making a washcloth. This is one of my favorite crochet stitches and creates a nice textured fabric.

Crochet Hook:

H (5.0mm) Hook, or size to meet gauge

Notions:

Removable stitch markers if needed
Yarn needle to weave in ends
Scissors

Yarn:

We Crochet Dishie Worsted Weight
100% Cotton, 190yds/100g
Colorway Navy, or color of choice.

Yardage:

Between 110-135 yds

Abbreviations/Stitches:

blo - back loop only
ch - chain
dc - double crochet
sc - single crochet
sl st - slip stitch
Stsc - stacked single crochet
st(s) -stitch(es)

Gauge:

17 sts by 16 rows = 4x4” in

Measurements/Sizes:

9 inches by 9 inches

Add or decrease the starting change to adjust the size larger or smaller.

Skill Level:

Beginner Crocheter

Crochet Pattern Notes:

There is no need to chain 1 at the beginning of each row. Without the beginning chain 1, you will have straighter edges. Use a stitch marker to keep track of the first stitch in the row.

Moss Stitch Washcloth Body

Moss Stitch Washcloth Border

RoundDescription
1Ch 1, sl st around the perimeter of the washcloth, placing (sl st, ch 1, sl st) on each corner, and one stitch per row on the sides, do not join.
2Stsc into the blo of the first stitch, dc in the blo each sl st around placing (dc, ch 1, dc) in each chain st on the corners, fasten of and use an invisible join to finish. Weave in ends.
