Construction
The Houndstooth Beanie is worked from the bottom up. First, we'll start by crocheting the ribbed brim in rows. Then, we’ll join the ribbing and start working the houndstooth pattern in the round, alternating colors every other round. To keep things simple, the yarn will be carried along, minimizing the number of ends to weave in.
If you love eye-catching hats made with two yarn colors, the Diamond Granny Stitch Hat and the Mosaic Ridge Hat are perfect!
Special Stitches
Sc3tog: [Insert into the next st, yo and pull up a loop] three times, there will be 4 sts on the hook, yo and pull through all the loops on the hook.
Pattern Notes
- A ch 1 at the beginning of a row is not counted as a stitch.
- Using a stitch marker at the beginning of each round is recommended.
- Sizes are written as: Newborn (Baby, Toddler) (Child, Adult, Large Adult).
The instructions and stitch counts are given for the smallest size, with the larger sizes in parentheses ( ). - Before you dive into your project, take a moment to identify the stitch and row counts that match the size you're making. By highlighting or marking them, you'll save time and effort later on. Trust us, this small step will make a big difference in your knitting or crochet journey!

Using the long tail and your yarn needle, loop through each remaining st of the hat all the way around. Pull closed and weave in all ends. Place a pompom on hat if desired, and wear!
I know I don’t have to tell you that crocheted hats make amazing gifts - you already know! It’s worth repeating, though. Handmade hats (and other wearables) are so meaningful because they’re made with love, warmth, and care.
Hats are customizable to anyone’s style and size, making them a practical, thoughtful, and personal present for anyone. A cozy, handcrafted hat keeps people warm during chilly months, making it a perfect winter essential.
Since they work up quickly, they’re also a great way to use up leftover yarn while making a big impact on someone’s life. Handmade hats are also perfect for craft fairs and charitable donations. The Juniper Knit-Look Hat and the Crochet Knit-Purl Hat are perfect for gifting and donating!
Cheers, and happy crocheting!
