Vertical Mattress Seam

Step 1:

Alight the two pieces of fabric you wish to seam. Measure an amount of yarn twice the length of the item you are seaming and place it on a yarn needle.

Step 2:

Insert your needle between the two bottom edge stitches of your fabric, picking up the horizontal bar.

Step 2:

Insert your needle between the two bottom edge stitches of the opposite fabric, picking up the horizontal bar.

Step 4:

Now, take the needle back to the second piece and pick up the bar above the last one you picked up on the other knit fabric side.

Repeat these steps until you have seamed the desired length, pulling the yarn on your needle to join the two pieces of fabric every so often. Fasten off and weave in ends to complete the seaming.

Depending on the gauge or density of the fabrics, sometimes it is just as effective to pick up every other bar, rather than ever bar. It is a personal choice.

Horizontal Mattress Seam

Step 1:

Alight the two pieces of fabric you wish to seam. Measure an amount of yarn twice the length of the item you are seaming and place it on a yarn needle.

Step 2:

Insert the tapestry needle from the back to the front between the first two stitches on the first (bottom) piece of fabric just above the cast-on stitch.

Step 3:

Insert the tapestry needle from the front to the back between the first two stitches of the second (top) piece of fabric and pull the yarn through.

Step 4:

Return to the first piece of fabric and insert the tapestry needle from the right side to wrong side where the yarn comes out of the piece. Slip the tapestry needle upward under two horizontal stands and bring the needle through to the right side.

Step 5:

Cross to the other side and repeat the same process, going down where you came out, under two strands and up.

Continue working back and forth between the two knit pieces of fabric, tightening and gently pulling on the yarn to snug the two pieces together.

Once seam is complete, fasten off and weave in ends.
