Construction

This cardigan is all about simplicity, texture, and beautiful drape — here’s how it comes together:

  1. Work Side to Side: Start at one end of the cardigan and crochet across the width, creating that signature Wheat Stitch™ texture as you go.
  2. Shape the Neckline: Once you reach the middle, you’ll form the neck opening — no complicated seaming required!
  3. Mirror the Second Side: Continue working across to create the second panel.
  4. Seam and Add Sleeves: Fold and seam the sides, then crochet the sleeves in the round, decreasing gradually to form a perfect cuff.
  5. Finishing Touches: Block for a smooth finish, and get ready to wear your new favorite cardigan on repeat.

Special Stitches

Puff Stitch: Yarn over and insert your hook into the stitch/space. Yarn over again and pull up a long loop. Yarn over and insert your hook into the same stitch/space. Yarn over again and pull up a long loop (5 loops on the hook). Yarn over and pull through the first 4 loops, yarn over and pull through remaining loops.

Two Colors:

When using two colors, work the single crochet rows and the starting trim of each row in the first color. Use the second color for all of the puff stitch repeats. Refer to the video tutorial for guidance.

Pattern Notes

  • The chain 1 at the beginning of the row does not count as a stitch.
  • This crochet garment is worked side to side in one piece. We’ll begin with the first section, then shape the opening for the neck, and finally complete the second section. To finish the body, simply seam both sides. Then each sleeve will be worked in the round and decreased until the cuff is complete.
  • The instructions and stitch counts are given for the smallest size, with the larger sizes in parentheses ( ).
  • Using a stitch marker at the beginning (and end) of the row is recommended.
  • Work the first row of scs in the back humps of the starting chain.
  • Before you dive into your project, take a moment to identify the stitch and row counts that match the size you’re making. By highlighting or marking them, you’ll save time and effort later on. Trust us, this small step will make a big difference in your knitting or crochet journey!

Style

Dress It Up or Down! The Wheat Stitch Cardigan works just as well with jeans and a tee as it does over a dress or cozy leggings or lounge pants.

Let’s talk about the real MVP of this project — the yarn!

WeCrochet Mighty Stitch is a total dream to work with for garments.

Here’s why I keep reaching for it:

  • ? Soft Yet Durable: This acrylic and superwash wool blend has the best of both worlds — cozy softness and easy care.
  • Smooth, Consistent Texture: It glides through your hook, making it perfect for showing off detailed stitches like the Wheat Stitch™.
  • ? Washable & Long-Lasting: Because your cardigan deserves to be worn and loved often — without fear of felting or pilling.
  • ? Gorgeous Color Options: From moody jewel tones to soft neutrals, there’s a shade for every season and personality.

In short? Mighty Stitch really lives up to its name. It’s the kind of yarn that makes handmade pieces feel store-bought (but better, because, well… you made it!).

Sizing Tips

  • To adjust the ease in this crochet cardigan pattern, select a larger size for a looser, more relaxed fit, or a smaller size for a closer, more fitted style. Comparing your body measurements to the finished garment measurements will help you determine the amount of ease you prefer. For a cozy, oversized cardigan, opt for more positive ease, while a sleek, tailored look is achieved by choosing less ease.
  • Since this crochet cardigan is worked from side to side, the starting chain determines the length of the garment from the hem to the shoulder. To make it longer, increase the number of starting chains in multiples of 2, and to make it shorter, reduce them. Just be sure to keep the stitch multiple in mind for the pattern repeat. Measuring your chain against your desired garment length before you begin will help ensure a perfect fit.
