How to Crochet A Gauge Swatch
Working a gauge swatch will help you determine if you have the correct sizing for this pattern. It will also help you practice the stitches used in this project and improve your stitch work for a flawless look.
Are you struggling to match the gauge? Check out the blog post on What is Crochet Gauge and How To Fix It
Construction
You’ll start your Wheat Stitch Snowman crochet pattern with the carrot nose — because every snowman needs a good first impression! ? Then it’s on to the main event: crochet the body all in one piece (no chilly gaps or separate spheres to sew together).
As you go, stitch the nose in place and add your rustic twine “X” buttons for that handmade farmhouse vibe. Once your snow buddy’s body is complete, it’s time to accessorize:
- Crochet a snug little Wheat Stitch scarf to keep them warm.
- Make a cozy hat that can be customized with stripes, pom poms, or extra sparkle.
- Finish with a twine ribbon tied around the hat for a perfect rustic touch.

☃️ Wheat Stitch Snowman FAQs
Q: What yarn works best for the Wheat Stitch Snowman?
A: I absolutely love using Herrschners Worsted Sparkle — it’s soft, sturdy, and adds the perfect subtle shimmer, just like freshly fallen snow! But you can use whatever yarn you prefer! The great thing about amigurumi is the freedom to experiment with any yarn you love — from fingering weight to bulky! Simply adjust your hook size to match your yarn choice, and have fun creating! (Presently, we can’t offer support if you try to modify the pattern as written.)
Q: How tall is the finished snowman?
A: The finished height will vary slightly based on your yarn and tension, but most makers end up with a snowman about 11 inches tall — therefore, this frosty friend is perfect for shelves, mantels, or gift toppers.
Q: Is the Wheat Stitch Snowman crochet pattern beginner-friendly?
A: As an advanced beginner pattern, you will need to know some basics (chaining, single crochet, the difference between front loops and back loops), and some general increasing and decreasing. That being said, this pattern is a great project for building confidence with texture and simple construction.
Q: Do I need to know the Wheat Stitch™?
A: The Wheat Stitch Tutorial breaks the stitch down step-by-step to help you master it before starting your snowman.
Special Stitches
Puff Stitch: Yarn over and insert your hook into the stitch/space; yarn over again and pull up a long loop; yarn over and insert your hook into the same stitch/space; yarn over again and pull up a long loop (5 loops on the hook); yarn over and pull through the first 4 loops; yarn over and pull through remaining loops.
Invisible sc2tog: Insert your hook into the front loop of the first st, then insert into the front loop of the second st (3 loops on the hook). Yarn over and pull through both front loops (2 loops on the hook), yarn
over and pull through the remaining loops on the hook.
Pattern Notes
- Warning: If you choose to add eyes, safety eyes are not suitable for children under 3 years old, as they can pose a choking hazard if they become detached. Adult supervision is recommended. Feel free to embroider the eyes.
- A ch 1 at the beginning of a row is not counted as a stitch.
- Using a stitch marker at the beginning (or end) of the round is recommended.
- Invisible Join: Cut the yarn, leaving a 6-8 inch tail. Using your yarn needle, insert the needle under both loops of the second stitch of the round. Next, pull the yarn gently through, then insert the needle back into the center of the last stitch you made, going straight down through the middle (where the yarn exited).

Let’s Sparkle!
If a snowman could pick its own yarn, it would absolutely choose Herrschners Worsted Sparkle. This yarn is everything winter crochet dreams are made of — soft, sturdy, and sprinkled with just the right amount of shimmer to make your stitches sparkle like freshly fallen snow.
For the Wheat Stitch™ Snowman crochet pattern, this yarn is pure perfection. The gentle sparkle catches the light beautifully, adding that magical, frosty glow without feeling scratchy or stiff. Made from durable acrylic with a subtle metallic thread, Herrschners Worsted Sparkle offers the ideal balance of structure and softness. It’s easy to work with, machine washable, and comes in a gorgeous variety of winter-ready shades — from crisp snow white to festive red and evergreen.
Whether you’re stitching up snowmen, wreaths, or any holiday décor that needs a touch of twinkle, this yarn brings instant seasonal magic. In short: Herrschners Worsted Sparkle is no joke — it’s the go-to yarn for crocheters who want their winter makes to shine.

Weave in those yarn tails nice and neat — no loose ends for this stylish snow buddy! Cut three long pieces of twine and tie them around the hat for that perfectly rustic flair. Pop the hat on your snowman’s head (give it a jaunty tilt if you’re feeling fancy) and tack it in place if you’d like. Wrap the scarf snugly around the neck, because even crochet snowmen deserve to stay cozy! And just like that, your frosty friend is ready to chill in style! ⛄?
