How to Crochet A Gauge Swatch
Working a gauge swatch will let you know if you will have the correct sizing for this pattern. It will also help you practice the stitches used in this project and improve your stitch work for a flawless look.

Construction
This sweater is worked using a top-down circular yoke construction, which means you’ll start at the neckline and work downward — allowing you to easily customize the length and fit as you go.
The neckline ribbing is crocheted in rows first, then joined to form the foundation for working in the round. From there, you’ll begin the wheat stitch yoke, shaping it with smooth, consistent increases that contour beautifully around the shoulders and upper body.

Special Stitches
Puff Stitch: Yarn over and insert your hook into the stitch/space. Yarn over again and pull up a long loop. Yarn over and insert your hook into the same stitch/space. Yarn over again and pull up a long loop (5 loops on the hook). Yarn over and pull through the first 4 loops, yarn over and pull through remaining loops.
Linked hdc: Insert your hook into the horizontal bar (the “leg”) of the previous stitch instead of directly into the next stitch (or for a ‘step-down’ insert into the fabric edge at the base of the previous stitch), then insert your hook into the next stitch as usual. Yarn over and pull through both loops, creating two loops on your hook. Yarn over again and pull through all three loops.
Pattern Notes
- The chain 1 at the beginning of the row does not count as a stitch.
- Using a stitch marker at the beginning of each row is recommended.
- The instructions and stitch counts are given for the smallest size, with the larger sizes in brackets ( ). Before you dive into your project, take a moment to identify the stitch and row counts that match the size you’re making. By highlighting or marking them, you’ll save time and effort later on. Trust us, this small step will make a big difference in your crochet journey!

Short Rows – Big Impact
What’s the Deal with Short Rows at the Neckline?
Short rows are a technique used to shape fabric by working only partway across a row before turning—this allows you to create curves or angles in a garment, which is especially helpful around the neckline.
When short rows are added at the neckline, they help raise the back of the neck slightly higher than the front, resulting in a more natural and comfortable fit. This shaping mimics the way our bodies are built—our necks don’t sit perfectly flat! So, short rows can make the garment feel less restrictive and help it sit better on the shoulders.
When short rows are not incorporated, the neckline will be more even from front to back. This creates a straight, flat neckline that can still work beautifully, especially for beginner-friendly or boxier styles. It’s a slightly easier construction with a clean, simple look.
The Wehat Stitch Sweater pattern includes instructions for adding short rows to your sweater or omitting them. You get to choose the style and fit that works best for you!

Yarn Love: My Honest Thoughts
I’ve made this sweater in two different yarns — and I’m obsessed with both.
✨ Malabrigo Arroyo (Two-Color Version)
Soft, luxurious, and bursting with color, Arroyo is a dream to work with. It has incredible stitch definition that really makes the wheat stitch pop. Each skein is hand-dyed, so no two sweaters will ever be exactly alike — a perfect choice for those who love a little personality in their makes. I paired Arco Iris with Natural, and the creamy, neutral single crochet rows make the stunningly colorful puff rows appear to glow. So gorgeous!
? Berroco Vintage DK (Single-Color Version)
If you’re after practicality with a soft, classic feel, Berroco Vintage DK is a winner. It’s washable, durable, and ideal for everyday wear. The tones are timeless, and the fabric drapes beautifully, making this yarn a fantastic option for your go-to neutral sweater. I grabbed the Begonia colorway, and wow. It’s so lush and vibrant…I honestly can’t stop staring at it!

Sizing Tips
- When choosing your size, consider the level of ease you’d like in your finished sweater. For a fitted look, choose the size closest to your bust measurement so the fabric hugs the body more closely. If you prefer a relaxed, cozier fit, choose a size that allows for approximately 2–4 inches of positive ease beyond your bust. Because this sweater is worked from the top down, you can also try it on as you go—making it easy to adjust by adding or removing stitches or rounds to achieve the amount of ease that feels best for you.
- Since this sweater is worked top-down, adjusting the sleeve length is super simple! You can stop at any point—whether you’d like a breezy t-shirt style, a chic three-quarter sleeve, or the classic full-length sleeve. Work your stitches and decreases until you reach your desired length, then finish it off with a ribbed cuff for a fitted look or leave it as an open, wide sleeve for a relaxed vibe.
- Don’t forget to try your sweater on as you go. The beauty of top-down construction is the ability to adjust the fit early, especially the yoke depth and bust circumference.
