Can this also be a simple basket?

Yes! The beautiful part about this pattern is if you don't want it to be a dragon, but a simple Easter basket, or even a storage basket, simply crochet the main parts. It's fun to play with colors for these Easter baskets.

Assembly:
To reinforce the basket, use plastic canvas. Place the round piece of plastic canvas into the bottom of the basket. Cut strips of canvas 26 squares wide (4” or 10cm) to line the sides of the basket. Overlap the strips on the inside of the basket. Using a yarn needle and Color A yarn, sew the top of the plastic lining to the last row of the basket.

For the handle, cut a strip of canvas 22 inches long (59cm) and 10 squares wide (1 ½” or 3.8cm). If longer canvas cannot be found, overlap smaller strips of canvas and stitch together with yarn to obtain length.
Slide the strip of canvas into the yarn sleeve and stitch ends closed.
Sew handle to inside of basket on either side approx. 1 inch from top. Sew through all layers securing tightly and hiding the stitching on the outside.
