Granny Grid: A Free Crochet Sudoku Game You Can Play Right Here

Granny Grid is a free crochet game that plays like sudoku, but with yarn. Instead of numbers, you fill a granny square blanket with balls of yarn so every colorway shows up once in each row, once in each column, and once in each granny square. It starts small and easy, then grows into a full nine-square blanket as you get the hang of it.

I made these games for the times you need a break from yarn but don’t want to take a break from yarn. Like sitting in the doctor’s office without your project bag. Granny Grid is the one to grab when you want something that keeps your brain busy.

You can play it right here on the blog, or in the Briana K Stitch app.

Play Granny Grid

How to play

The goal is simple. Fill every empty spot in the blanket so each colorway shows up once in every row, once in every column, and once in every granny square. Some balls of yarn come with the blanket to get you started.

Level 1 of Granny Grid, a small four-square blanket with some balls of yarn already in place

Tap a square, then pick a yarn

Tap an empty spot and it gets a dark outline. Then tap a ball of yarn in the row under the blanket to drop it in.

Rather work one color at a time? Tap a ball of yarn first, then tap every spot you want it in. Tap the ball again to put it down. The little number on top of each ball in that row tells you how many of that colorway you still need to place.

Watch for dashed rings

If two of the same colorway land in one row, column, or granny square, both get a dashed ring, and the tip line above the blanket tells you which color doubled up. Tap the spot and pick a different yarn, or tap Erase. The balls that came with the blanket stay put, so you’ll always be fixing one of yours.

Use Notes when you’re not sure

Tap Notes, pick a spot, then tap the yarn colors it might be. Each one shows up as a small dot, so you can keep track of your options without committing. Tap a color again to rub it out. Tap Notes again to go back to placing yarn.

Erase, Undo, and Hint

  • Erase takes out a ball you placed. Tap the spot, then Erase.
  • Undo takes back your last move.
  • Hint fixes a wrong ball or fills in a spot for you when you’re stuck.
  • The restart arrow at the top clears the board for a fresh start, and Undo brings your balls back if you change your mind.

Finish the blanket

Once every spot is filled with no doubles, every square gets joined and you’ll see how many hints you used. Tap Next level to keep going.

The blanket grows as you go

Granny Grid starts you off easy and builds from there:

  • Levels 1 to 3: a small four-square blanket with four colorways.
  • Levels 4 to 9: a six-square blanket with six colorways.
  • Level 10 and up: the full nine-square blanket with nine colorways.

Through level 30, every puzzle can be solved without guessing, so if you’re stuck, there’s always a next move. Notes help you find it.

Real yarn colors

Every colorway in the game is a real Herrschners Worsted 8 shade: Raspberry, Daffodil, China Blue, Lime, Eggplant, Blaze, Teal, Walnut, and Periwinkle. Tap the gear at the top to see the colorways for your level by name. That’s also where you can turn the sound on or off, and turn the numbers on the yarn on or off. The numbers are handy if some of the colors look alike to you.
