That’s what the Games section of the app is for, and Loose Ends is the newest one to get its own spotlight here on the blog. It’s a free crochet solitaire game, built from the ground up in yarn balls, granny squares, and a running tally of who’s winning this week, and it lives right next to the other free tools you already use.

What Loose Ends Actually Is
Loose Ends is a classic seven-column solitaire game, the same shape as the card game most people already know as Klondike, just entirely restyled for a crochet crowd. Instead of hearts, clubs, diamonds, and spades, you’re sorting yarn balls, hearts, granny squares, and scissors.
The tagline says it best: tidy the whole mess into four neat piles. Your goal is to build all four of those piles, one per icon, from Ace up to King. Everything starts scattered across seven columns, and it’s on you to work it into order.
The two icon families split by color, as a normal deck splits into red and black. Yarn ball and heart are your “berry” cards. Granny square and scissors are “teal.” That distinction matters once you start playing, because it’s the whole basis for how cards stack.
Even the card art got the treatment. The Ace shows a full yarn ball, the Jack a hook mid-stitch, the Queen a small sheep portrait, and the King a teddy bear, each one framed in whichever color matches its suit. It’s a small touch, but it’s the kind of small touch that makes the app feel like it was built by someone who actually crochets, not licensed from a generic game template.
How to Play Loose Ends
If you’ve played solitaire before, you already know most of this. If you haven’t, Loose Ends is a great place to start because the app tells you exactly what to do at every step.
Down at the bottom of the screen, underneath buttons like Finish It and New Game, there’s one more labeled How to Play. Tap it, and the app walks you through the whole rundown right there.
The goal. Build all four foundation piles from Ace to King, one pile per icon.
Moving cards. You can drag a card exactly where you want it, or you can just tap it and let the game find its own way. A tap sends the card to a foundation pile when it’s ready; otherwise, it moves it to whichever column makes the most sense.
How the columns stack. Cards in the columns stack downward and alternate color families. A teal card needs a berry card sitting above it, and a berry card needs a teal one. So a teal 7 goes on a berry 8, and so on.
Moving more than one card. If you’ve got a run of cards already stacked correctly, you can move the whole run in one tap by tapping the card at the top of that run.
Empty columns. Only a King can start a new column once one opens up. Every other card needs somewhere to stack.
The draw pile. Tap it to turn cards over. Once it runs out, tap the empty space where it used to be to gather everything back up and go again.
Easy or Hard. A gear icon near the top of the board lets you switch between two draw styles. Easy turns one card at a time off the draw pile, so you’ll eventually see everything in it. Hard turns three at once, which means only the top card of those three is playable until you work through it.
If you get stuck. Undo goes back as far as you want, so there’s no penalty for testing a move. Finish It will play the rest of the game out automatically once every card on the board is face up. And if you genuinely can’t tell whether a move is left, Stuck? will check the table for you and let you know.
One more thing worth knowing going in: not every deal can be won. That’s true of every solitaire game, Loose Ends included, and it’s refreshing that the app just says so instead of pretending otherwise. If a deal feels impossible, it might be. Deal a fresh one and move on.
Built for a Break, Not a Marathon
Every round of Loose Ends tracks your score, your moves, your time, and your best time, right there at the top of the board, so you always know if you just beat your own record.
There’s also a Leaderboard, so you can see how you stack up against everyone else playing today. It’s a nice bit of low-stakes competition to have running in the background of your day.
