Bring a little love to your winter wardrobe with the Wheat Stitch™ Sweetheart Hat—a cozy crochet beanie featuring adorable heart motifs created with simple colorwork and rich, squishy texture. This heart hat blends my signature Wheat Stitch™ with charming sweetheart details for a handmade accessory that feels both modern and timeless.

You’ll work comfortably in rows, enjoying the rhythmic texture of my signature Wheat Stitch™. To finish up, you’ll seam your rectangle closed, then cinch the top to create a cozy beanie. Add extra flair, if desired, with a leather tag or a fluffy pompom.

If you love crochet projects that are calming, textured, and full of personality, this Sweetheart Hat is a quick make you’ll want to repeat—especially since sizes from Newborn through Adult Large are included. Construction

The Wheat Stitch™ Sweetheart Hat is designed for ease and comfort:

  1. Main Fabric (Worked Flat): You’ll crochet the body in rows using the Wheat Stitch™ and simple colorwork to create the heart motifs.
  2. Seaming: Once the rectangle reaches the desired width, seam it into a tube to form the hat body.
  3. Crown Shaping: Gather the top for a classic beanie fit that sits comfortably and looks timeless.
  4. Finishing Touches: Add a leather tag and pompom for extra flair. Printable tags are included for gifting or market displays.

The result is a cozy, textured beanie that feels thoughtful and handmade—without complicated shaping.

Like making hats? Then you’ll love getting hooked on the Houndstooth Beanie, the Diamond Granny Stitch Hat, and the Autumn Wheat Hat.

Special Stitches

Puff Stitch: Yarn over and insert your hook into the stitch/space; yarn over again and pull up a long loop; yarn over and insert your hook into the same stitch/space; yarn over again and pull up a long loop (5 loops on the hook); yarn over and pull through the first 4 loops; yarn over and pull through remaining loops.

Pattern Notes

  • This hat tends to be on the slouchy side. For a shorter length, subtract from the beginning chain in multiples of 2 and then follow instructions.
  • Tip for color changes: On the final yarn over of the stitch before the color change, yarn over with the new color and pull through to complete the stitch.
  • A ch 1 at the beginning of a row is not counted as a stitch. Using a stitch marker at the beginning of each row is recommended.
  • Work the first row of stitches in the back humps of the starting chain.
  • Keep the blo sc sts loose for the ribbing. Making them too tight will result in a hat that doesn’t fit well.
  • The instructions and stitch counts are given for Regular Brim, with the Fold-Up Brim in brackets ( ).
  • This Pattern Uses Standard US Terminology. I use affiliate links and follow GPSR Compliance: privacy & disclosure policy here.

Seaming

Fold the hat so the rows meet (the first row with the last row worked) with the WS facing out.

Insert your hook through the first stitch closest to you, and then in the stitch of the side farthest from you. Yarn over and sl st to join.

Continue working all the stitches down the row until they are all joined.
Now flip your hat to the RS facing out.

Finishing

Using the long tail and your yarn needle, loop through each point (every two rows) of the hat all the way around. Pull closed and weave in end. Place a pompom on hat if desired, and wear!
