Construction
This Wheat Stitch™ Crochet Heart Pattern is worked in the round with gentle shaping to create that classic heart silhouette.
You’ll begin at the bottom point and crochet upward using the Wheat Stitch™ repeat to build beautiful texture. As the heart grows, increases shape the curves, and the top sections are formed one side at a time.
Because this pattern works well in any yarn weight, the size of your finished heart can be easily customized:
- Use worsted weight for mediumisized hearts
- Use bulky yarn for plush, oversized hearts
- Use lightweight yarn for small decorations
- Use finering-weight or thread for tiny hearts perfect for acts of random crochet kindness
Finish by stuffing lightly and closing the top neatly for a polished handmade heart.

Special Stitches
Puff Stitch: Yarn over and insert your hook into the stitch/space, yarn over again and pull up a long loop, yarn over and insert your hook into the same stitch/space, yarn over again and pull up a long loop (5 loops on the hook), yarn over and pull through the first 4 loops, yarn over and pull through remaining loops.
Pattern Notes
- Warning: Safety eyes are not suitable for children under three years old, as they can pose a choking hazard if they become detached. Adult supervision is recommended. Feel free to embroider the eyes.
- A ch 1 at the beginning of a row is not counted as a stitch.
- Using a stitch marker at the beginning (or end) of the round is recommended.
- Invisible Join: Cut the yarn, leaving a 6-8 inch tail. Using your yarn needle, insert the needle under both loops of the second stitch of the round. Pull the yarn through gently, then insert the needle back into the center of the last stitch you made, going straight down through the middle (where the yarn exited).

Sizing Tips
One of the best things about this Wheat Stitch™ Heart is how easily you can adjust the size just by changing your yarn and hook!
The exact same pattern will create different-sized hearts depending on what yarn you choose:
- Fingering or sport weight yarn → a small, delicate heart (perfect for garlands, keychains, or appliqués)
- DK or light worsted yarn → a medium heart (great for ornaments and gift toppers)
- Worsted weight yarn → a classic plush heart size (soft, squishy, and giftable!)
- Bulky or super bulky yarn → an extra large, statement heart (so fun for pillows or big cozy décor)
Make sure to change your hook size if you change your yarn weight!
- Smaller hook → tighter stitches, firmer shape, slightly smaller heart
- Larger hook → looser drape, softer feel, slightly larger heart
For stuffed or 3D hearts, I recommend using a hook slightly smaller than the yarn label suggests so your stuffing doesn’t peek through.
