This scarf is worked flat in rows, using simple stitches that create an elegant, raised wheat-like texture.

Here’s a quick overview of the process:

  1. Start with a foundation chain in your chosen size (the chain determines the length of your scarf).
  2. Work in the wheat stitch pattern across each row, repeating until you reach the desired width.

How to Create Fringe

To create the fringe on each end, we are going to use the larkshead knot.

Step-by-step diagram showing how to tie a lark's head knot with a rope around a horizontal bar.

Step 1: Cut Your Fringe

Cut several strands of yarn to the same length. For a thicker fringe, hold 4–5 strands together.

Step 2: Fold Strands in Half

Take your strands and fold them evenly in half to create a loop at the top.

Step 3: Insert the Loop

From the front side of your scarf, insert the folded loop through the edge stitch where you want the fringe.

Step 4: Pull Ends Through the Loop

Bring the cut yarn ends over the edge of the scarf and pull them through the loop.

Step 5: Tighten the Knot

Gently pull the yarn ends down until the knot is snug against the scarf edge.

Style

One of the best things about a handmade scarf is its versatility—you can wear it a little differently each time!

Classic Look: Drape the scarf around your neck and let the ends hang loose.

European Loop: Fold the scarf in half, pull the ends through the loop, and adjust to sit snug.

Shawl-Style: For a cozy oversized piece, wear it over the shoulders or belt it at the waist as a statement accessory.
