The Desert Cactus Mosaic Crochet Free Blanket came about while chatting with a crochet friend; we were talking about designs and messing around with different shapes and styles. Some of my favorite designs come from just sitting around talking and being creative with friends.

During our chat, I showed her the colors I wanted to use with all the earth tones, and desert boho was the way to go. I wanted to capture the many scenes and aspects of a desert. While I could have chosen any colorwork technique to bring the Desert Cactus Mosaic Crochet Blanket to life, I have been greatly inspired by Mosaic Crochet lately and knew it was the way to go.

Getting Started with Mosaic Crochet

Before you get started on the Desert Cactus Mosaic Crochet Blanket, I would suggest taking a look at my post, "Mosaic Crochet Tips & Tricks"; it is full of step-by-step instructions and a video tutorial that will make Mosaic Crochet less intimidating, especially if you are new to Mosaic Crochet and all the wonderful design aspects.

You will be introduced to my preferred Mosaic Crochet method - Interlocking Mosaic Crochet - where you work two rows with each color to minimize yarn tails, and you crochet around the chain spaces giving a cleaner look to your wrong side.

It is no secret that I like to push the envelope with stitches and designs, especially colorwork designs, and the Desert Cactus Mosaic Crochet Blanket is no different. I had so much fun while designing the Desert Cactus Mosaic Crochet Blanket I included two options for the blanket border, a Mosaic Crochet Border and a Simple Border.

Each section of the Desert Cactus Mosaic Crochet Blanket is separated out to make the charts easy to follow, don't worry if you don't like charts; written instructions are also included.

Notes for Success

The Desert Cactus Mosaic Crochet Blanket is such a fun adventure to work up with the many different patterns neatly displayed in each section. This style of the mosaic will only work one color per row. There is no need to fasten off colors when changing every two rows, simply carry it up the side. The border will be worked over these strands. For this style of crochet I do not chain 2 to make the 1 chain space as other patterns do. I simply chain 1 for each skipped square loosely and continue on.

If you want to hide your chains on the back of your work, to not be a choking/entanglement risk, work the mdc around the chain stitches so that the chain is incorporated into the mdc. Each section has both the written and chart instructions on the following pages.

Special Stitches:
mdc: A mosaic double crochet is worked as a double crochet stitch, but it will be worked into the skipped stitch three rows below. This stitch will be worked on the front (or right sides) or the blanket.

The hdc stitches will now be worked in the third loop for the rest of the blanket edging.
