How to Crochet A Gauge Swatch
Working a gauge swatch will let you know if you will have the correct sizing for this pattern. It will also help you practice the stitches used in this project and improve your stitch work for a flawless look.

Construction
The Summer House Crochet Tank is worked sideways in one continuous piece, starting at one edge and crocheting across the body. You’ll work in rows with shaping done at the edges by increasing and decreasing stitches to form the neckline and underarms.
Puff stitch panels are added along each side as you go, giving the tank texture and visual interest. Once the body is complete, you’ll crochet puff stitch straps directly onto the top — no extra seaming required.
This construction method makes it easy to adjust the length or width of your tank as needed. For a cropped look, simply stop a few rows early. Want more width? Add rows to the back or space them evenly across the front and back sections. It’s a relaxing project with big style payoff.

Special Stitches
Stacked Single Crochet (Stsc): Do NOT chain, insert hook into next stitch, yo, pull up a loop, yo and pull through both loops, insert hook in the vertical bar below, yo, pull up a loop, yo and pull through both
loops on the hook.
Puff Stitch: Yarn over and insert your hook into the stitch/space. Yarn over again and pull up a long loop. (Yarn over and insert your hook into the same stitch/space. Yarn over again and pull up a long loop) two
more times (7 loops on the hook). Yarn over and pull through the first 6 loops, yarn over and pull through remaining loops.
Third Loop: What’s really cool about half double crochet is that there’s a third loop on the back of your stitch when working in rows. If you work hdc into the third loop, you get a totally different, knit-like fabric. For this pattern, we are going to be working in rows, which means we will work on the
row below through the third loop on the front of our work.
Crochet Pattern Notes
- This pattern substitutes a traditional chain 2 on the edges for a Stacked Single Crochet.
A ch 1 on the beginning of a single crochet row is not necessary.
- Work the first and the last st in each row through both loops.
- Using a stitch marker at the beginning of each row is recommended.
- The instructions and stitch counts are given for the smallest size, with the larger sizes in
brackets ( ). Before you dive into your project, take a moment to identify the stitch and row
counts that match the size you’re making. By highlighting or marking them, you’ll save time
and effort later on. Trust us, this small step will make a big difference in your crochet journey!

Tip: To ensure the straps are the best length, pin it in place and try it on, adjust with more or fewer puff stitches as needed. This is also a great time to decide on placement and consider how to best cover
bra straps if needed.
Once the length of the strap is determined, fasten off leaving a tail. Sew the straps to the front peaks of the tank and then to the back of the tank.
Want a criss-cross strap on the back? Adjust the length of the straps for a comfortable fit and then sew in place.
Finishing
Weave in all ends and lightly block again if necessary. Wear and enjoy your crochet tank top!
Once your Summer House Tank is finished, be sure to care for it properly. Handwash your top in cool water using a mild detergent and lay it flat to dry. This helps preserve the shape of your straps and the clean edges of your puff stitch details. If you used a cotton or cotton-blend yarn, your top will get softer with each wear — perfect for summer layering.
Want to accessorize your handmade summer look? Try pairing your tank with a Wheat Stitch Rectangle Bag, or keep cozy with the Autumn Wheat Cardigan when the sun goes down. And if you’re in love with the puff stitch details, don’t miss the Wheat Stitch Tank Top— it’s full of them!
Cheers, and happy crocheting!
