If you love crochet projects that make you feel wildly productive in under an hour, the Wheat Stitch™ Dishtowel Holder is about to become your new favorite make. This pattern is practical, giftable, craft-fair friendly, and genuinely fun to stitch.

Worked flat in rows using my signature Wheat Stitch™, this towel holder has a rich texture and beautiful stitch definition that instantly elevates a simple kitchen essential. Once the panel is complete, you’ll add a clean, even edging that pulls everything together…and lets you add the wooden rings as you crochet. That’s right—no sewing! To finish it off, a sweet scalloped border adds just the right amount of charm—because functional doesn’t have to mean boring.

Construction
The Wheat Stitch™ Dishtowel Holder is designed to be straightforward and stress-free.
- Main Panel (Worked Flat): You’ll crochet the body flat in rows using the Wheat Stitch™, creating a textured rectangle with beautiful stitch definition.
- Clean Edging: Once the panel is complete, you’ll work an even edging around the entire piece to smooth and polish the edges.
- Ring Attachment (Built In): During the edging round, the wooden rings are attached directly into the stitches—no sewing required.
- Scalloped Finish: A final scalloped border adds a soft, decorative touch that complements the texture and keeps things charming.
Weave in those ends and your new dishtowel holder is ready to be used! If you have some leftover cotton yarn, make a few Reusable Easter Eggs, Wheat Stitch™ Pickles, or Moss Stitch Dishcloths!

Special Stitches
Stacked Single Crochet (Stsc): Do NOT chain, insert hook into next stitch, yo, pull up a loop, yo and pull through both loops, insert hook in the vertical bar below, yo, pull up a loop, yo and pull through both loops on the hook.
Puff Stitch: Yarn over and insert your hook into the stitch/space; yarn over again and pull up a long loop; yarn over and insert your hook into the same stitch/space; yarn over again and pull up a long loop (5 loops on the hook); yarn over and pull through the first 4 loops; yarn over and pull through remaining loops.
Pattern Notes
- Cotton yarn is my go-to choice for dishtowel holders, and for good reason. Unlike acrylic or wool, cotton has very little stretch, which means your holder won’t slowly sag or lose its shape over time (no sad, droopy towels around here). It’s also super absorbent, durable, and handles frequent washing like a champ, perfect for hardworking kitchen projects. If you want a towel holder that stays snug, sturdy, and practical for everyday use, cotton is the way to go.
- For striping, work every two sc rows in one color, and every 2 puff st rows in a different color. Change colors by yarning over with the new color when making the last stitch of the row before your new color begins. Keep both colors attached and carry the unused yarn up the back of the dishtowel holder without fastening off.
- This Pattern Uses Standard US Terminology. I use affiliate links and follow GPSR Compliance: privacy & disclosure policy here.

Border
Now we’re going to attach our wooden rings to the short ends of our crocheted piece. If you do not want to attach them as you go, you can work the Border without crocheting around the rings and then sew them on at the end.
To attach the rings as you work the first round of the Border, hold one wooden ring behind your work with the top edge of the ring showing. As you work your clean edge stitches across the short end of your piece, you will work into the crocheted piece and around the ring at the same time. You will repeat that process at the other end of your piece, and your rings will be attached with no sewing needed! See the video for more details.
Rnd 1 (RS):
With the RS facing and working along the outer edges of the dishtowel holder, sc along the edges as follows: sc in next stitch, *insert your hook into the left bar of the sc st, then insert into the next row edge space. YO and pull up a loop, then pull through the first loop on the hook. YO and pull through the remaining two loops on the hook. Repeat from * all the way around the edges of your work.
For a step-by-step look at how this simple, straight edge is worked, check out this post: https://brianakdesigns.com/how-to-crochet-a-straight-edge/
For a clean & modern look, stop here and skip the scallop. To add a scalloped edge, continue to Rnd 2.
Rnd 2:
Do not join and sl st in the first egde st, skip the next st, 3dc-shell into the next, *[skip 1, sl st in next, skip 1, 3dc-shell st in next] until next corner st, 5dc-shell st in the corner st (add 6 dc on corners if it’s curling too much for your taste); repeat from *around, until you are back to the first st of the rnd, 2 dc in the same as the first st, join and fasten off.
