Construction
The Wheat Stitch™ Mug Cozy is worked flat in rows in 3 steps:
- Body: You’ll crochet a rectangle in flat rows using the Wheat Stitch™ until it’s long enough to wrap comfortably around your mug.
- Handle Loops (Worked As You Go): Instead of sewing anything on later, the handle loops are formed right in the pattern—still one continuous piece.
- Finishing: Choose between a clean edge or the optional scalloped border, weave in your ends, and enjoy!
The result is a snug, stylish mug cozy that stays put and looks adorable from every angle. Love small projects, perfect for using up stash yarn? Check out the Wheat Stitch™ Keychain & Lanyard, the Wheat Stitch™ Pumpkin Cup Cozy, and the Macchiato Coaster!

Special Stitches
Stacked Single Crochet (Stsc): Do NOT chain, insert hook into next stitch, yo, pull up a loop, yo and pull through both loops, insert hook in the vertical bar below, yo, pull up a loop, yo and pull through both loops on the hook.
Puff Stitch: Yarn over and insert your hook into the stitch/space; yarn over again and pull up a long loop; yarn over and insert your hook into the same stitch/space; yarn over again and pull up a long loop (5 loops on the hook); yarn over and pull through the first 4 loops; yarn over and pull through remaining loops.
Pattern Notes
- For mug cozies, it’s always better to remember that crochet fabric relaxes with handling, heat, and gravity — so if you crochet the cozy to your exact mug size, it might end up loose after a little use.
- For striping, work every two sc rows in one color, and every 2 puff st rows in a different color. Change colors by yarning over with the new color when making the last stitch of the row before your new color begins. Keep both colors attached and carry the unused yarn up the back of the mug cozy without fastening off.
- This Pattern Uses Standard US Terminology. I use affiliate links and follow GPSR Compliance: privacy & disclosure policy here.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this hotpad beginner-friendly?
☕ If you’re comfortable with my signature Wheat Stitch™, you’ll feel right at home. (Not familiar with this stitch? You can find the tutorial here: https://brianakdesigns.com/how-to-crochet-the-wheat-stitch/)
Will this fit different mug sizes?
☕ Absolutely. You can easily adjust the rectangle’s width or length to fit larger or smaller mugs.
What yarn works best for mug cozies?
☕ Cotton or cotton-blend yarns are ideal since they handle heat better and hold their shape well.
Do I have to add the scalloped edge?
☕ Nope! The cozy looks great with a clean edge, but the scallops are there if you want a little extra personality.
How long does it take to make this mug cozy?
☕ Not long at all! Everyone crochets at different speeds, but you should be able to easily whip one of these up in an hour or less!
