Wrap yourself in beautiful texture with the Petal Loop Stitch Blanket crochet pattern, a cozy and eye-catching design that truly lets this stunning stitch shine.
This textured crochet blanket is worked flat in rows using the Petal Loop Stitch, a 4-row repeat that combines simple stitches with a unique loop construction to create soft, petal-like textures that flow across the fabric. The result is a blanket that feels just as good as it looks, rich in texture, cozy, and full of visual interest.

One of the best things about this stitch is how quickly it becomes rhythmic and relaxing, making it a satisfying project whether you’re crocheting a small baby blanket or a king-size throw.

Special Stitches
Stacked Single Crochet (Stsc): Do NOT chain, insert hook into next stitch, yo, pull up a loop, yo and pull through both loops, insert hook in the vertical bar below, yo, pull up a loop, yo and pull through both loops on the hook.
3-Loop-Petal: Insert the hook into the back loop of the previously worked star (or stitch) and pull up a loop. Pull up one loop in each of the next two stitches of the previous row, for a total of four loops on the hook. Yarn over and draw through all four loops to complete the stitch.
Clean Sc: Insert your hook into the left bar of the sc st, then insert into the next row edge space. YO and pull up a loop, then pull through the first loop on the hook. YO and pull through the remaining two loops on the hook.

Construction
The Petal Loop Stitch Blanket is worked flat in rows, beginning with a starting chain that is a multiple of 2.
From there, the blanket is built using a repeating 4-row stitch pattern that creates the signature looped petal texture across the fabric. As the rows build, the loops layer beautifully to create a soft, dimensional fabric with a flowing texture.

Despite the intricate look, the stitch pattern becomes easy to memorize after a few repeats. And because we’re holding two strands of worsted-weight yarn together, these rows build quickly! Once the main body of the blanket is complete, a structured border is worked evenly around all four sides, smoothing the edges and framing the textured stitch pattern.

Pattern Notes
- This pattern substitutes a traditional chain 2 on some edges for a Stacked Single Crochet. A ch 1 at the beginning of a single crochet row is unnecessary.
- For striping, work Rows 1 & 2 in one color, and Rows 3 & 4 in a different color. Change colors by yarning over with the new color when making the last stitch of the row before your new color begins. Keep both colors attached and carry the unused yarn up the back of the blanket without fastening off.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions About the Petal Loop Stitch Trivet
Is this Petal Loop Stitch Blanket beginner-friendly?
🧶 This pattern is best suited for easy-to-intermediate crocheters, especially those comfortable learning a new stitch pattern. A full, step-by-step tutorial for the Petal Loop Stitch can be found here: How to Crochet the Petal Loop Stitch
How many sizes are included?
🧶 The full PDF available in my Etsy and Ravelry shops includes 20 different blanket sizes, from small baby blankets to king-sized options. For this free version, we are making a Throw size.
Is this stitch easier than the star stitch?
🧶 Yes! Many crocheters find the Petal Loop Stitch easier because the repeat becomes rhythmic quickly and is easier to manage across rows.
What yarn weight works best?
🧶 This pattern will work beautifully with a variety of yarn weights. Your yarn choice will determine the final look, feel, and size of your blanket. I wanted my blanket to be squishy and cozy, so I doubled up worsted-weight yarn to make a thicker blanket. As written, the pattern and gauge measurements match that decision. But you can use any weight you prefer.
How Long Does It Take to Crochet a Petal Loop Stitch Blanket?
🧶 One of the most common questions with any crochet blanket is: How long will it take to make?
The answer depends on the size you choose, your crochet speed, and how much time you have to dedicate. Here’s a helpful guideline to give you an idea.
Estimated Time by Blanket Size
Baby Blanket
⏱️ 6–10 hours total
Perfect for a weekend project or a few cozy evenings of stitching.
Lap Blanket / Throw
⏱️ 12–20 hours total
A great “relax and crochet” project that you can work on over a week or two.
Full-Size Blanket
⏱️ 20–40+ hours total
Ideal for longer-term projects—perfect for slow, mindful stitching sessions.
Tips to Speed Up Your Crochet Time
🧶 Use yarn held double
This creates a thicker fabric and helps your blanket grow more quickly. And this is why I did exactly that for this design!
🧶 Break it into sections
Set small goals, such as completing a certain number of rows per day.
🧶 Use stitch markers
Helpful for tracking repeats and reducing mistakes.
🧶 Make it your “relax project“
This stitch is perfect for crocheting while watching TV or unwinding at the end of the day.
Whether you finish your blanket in a weekend or take your time and enjoy the process, this is one of those projects that’s just as fun to make as it is to use.

Love Star Stitch? You’ll Be Obsessed with This
If you’ve ever been drawn to the texture of the crochet star stitch but struggled with tension or stitch placement, the Petal Loop Stitch is perfect for you!
It creates a similarly rich, textured fabric, but many crocheters find it easier to learn and much more rhythmic once established.
Instead of pulling up multiple loops through the eye and across several stitches (including shared stitches that can be confusing to find), the hook placement for the 3-petal stitch rows is simpler, and builds texture in a way that feels more natural as you move across each row.

Best Yarn for a Textured Crochet Blanket
Choosing the right yarn will make a big difference in how your Petal Loop Stitch Blanket turns out.
Cotton or Cotton Blends
Great for lighter blankets and warmer climates. These yarns highlight stitch definition beautifully.
Acrylic or Acrylic Blends
Perfect for cozy blankets, especially for larger sizes. These yarns are soft, affordable, and easy to care for.
Smooth Yarn (Highly Recommended)
Because this stitch is so textured, smoother yarns will help the petal loops stand out clearly.
Best Colors for Texture
Solid colors or subtle tonal shades work best to showcase the stitch pattern. Highly variegated yarns may hide the texture.
