Petal Loop Stitch Washcloth Crochet Pattern

If you love crochet stitches that create beautiful texture with a simple repeat, the Petal Loop Stitch Washcloth is a perfect project to add to your crochet rotation.

This washcloth is built around the Petal Loop Stitch, a textured crochet stitch worked in a repeating 4-row pattern that combines simple stitches in a unique way to create a stunning textured surface. The soft looped “petals” create a fabric that’s both decorative and tactile, making it perfect for practical projects like washcloths and dishcloths.

Three images show crochet petal loop stitch washcloths in pastel colors, labeled "Handmade with Love," yarn and tools, and a woman holding a basket with finished washcloths.

If you love the look of the crochet star stitch but wish it were a little easier to work, the Petal Loop Stitch gives you a similar, beautiful texture with a smoother, more approachable rhythm.

This washcloth pattern is also a fantastic way to practice the new Petal Loop Stitch pattern without committing to a larger project like a blanket or garment. It’s quick, satisfying, and perfect for using up cotton yarn from your stash. Whether you’re building a handmade spa set, experimenting with new crochet stitches, or looking for a relaxing weekend project, this washcloth is a wonderful addition to your crochet library.

Construction

The Petal Loop Stitch Washcloth is worked flat in rows, making it an approachable project for crocheters who enjoy learning new stitch patterns.

You’ll begin with a foundation chain and then work the stitch pattern across the row. The fabric is built using a repeating 4-row sequence that forms the signature looped petals across the surface. Despite its intricate appearance, the stitch pattern becomes very easy to memorize after the first few repeats.

Once the washcloth reaches the desired height, the piece is finished with a simple edging that smooths the sides and creates a clean, polished finish.

Special Stitches

3-Loop-Petal: Insert the hook into the back loop of the previously worked star (or stitch) and pull up a loop. Pull up one loop in each of the next two stitches of the previous row, for a total of four loops on the hook. Yarn over and draw through all four loops to complete the stitch.

Stacked Single Crochet (Stsc): Do NOT chain, insert hook into next stitch, yo, pull up a loop, yo and pull through both loops, insert hook in the vertical bar below, yo, pull up a loop, yo and pull through both loops on the hook.

Pattern Notes

  • This pattern substitutes a traditional chain 2 on the hdc and Petal Loop Stitch rows for a Stacked Single Crochet.
  • A ch 1 at the beginning of a single crochet row is unnecessary.
  • For striping, work Rows 1 & 2 in one color, and Rows 3 & 4 in a different color. Change colors by yarning over with the new color when making the last stitch of the row before your new color begins. Keep both colors attached and carry the unused yarn up the back of the washcloth without fastening off.

🧶 Best Yarn for Crochet Washcloths

Choosing the right yarn can make a big difference when crocheting washcloths. The best yarns for this type of project are durable, absorbent, and able to show off textured stitches clearly.

For the Petal Loop Stitch Washcloth, smooth yarns help highlight the beautiful looped texture across the fabric’s surface.

Here are a few yarn types that work especially well:

Cotton Yarn

Cotton yarn is the most popular choice for crochet washcloths because it is durable, absorbent, and holds stitch definition beautifully. The Petal Loop Stitch texture really stands out when worked in cotton yarn.

Cotton Blend Yarn

Cotton blends can add a bit of softness while still maintaining durability. These yarns are great if you want a washcloth that feels slightly softer against the skin.

Best Yarn Colors for Textured Stitches

Solid colors tend to highlight textured stitches like the Petal Loop Stitch the best. Lighter colors especially help the loops and petals stand out across the fabric.
