Construction
This scrunchie is worked flat in rows using the simple and beginner-friendly Double Bloom Stitch, creating a soft, textured fabric as you go.
You’ll begin by crocheting a rectangular strip, building the length first. The stitch pattern is easy to repeat, making this a relaxing project you can take with you and work on anywhere. Once your strip reaches the desired length, an elastic hair tie is enclosed inside the folded fabric. When finished, the scrunchie gathers naturally around the elastic, creating a soft, full shape with beautiful texture.

Pattern Notes
- This pattern substitutes a traditional chain 2 on some edges for a Stacked Single Crochet. A ch 1 at the beginning of a single crochet row is unnecessary.
- This design is easily customizable to fit your needs. To adjust the width, simply begin by chaining the number of stitches needed for your desired size, working in multiples of 2 plus 1 for the turning chain. Whether you want a large or small scrunchie, just chain to the width you prefer, then continue by following Row 2 of the instructions until the desired length.
- Work the first row of stitches in the back humps of the starting chain.
- Using a stitch marker at the beginning of each row is recommended.
- This Pattern Uses Standard US Terminology. I use affiliate links and follow GPSR Compliance: privacy & disclosure policy.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions About this Easy Crochet Scrunchie
How long does it take to crochet a scrunchie?
🧶 Most crocheters can complete this scrunchie in under an hour, making it a perfect quick project.
Is this crochet scrunchie beginner-friendly?
🧶 You bet! This pattern uses a simple stitch repeat and basic construction, making it great for beginners or anyone looking for an easy project.
What yarn works best for crochet scrunchies?
🧶 You can use a variety of yarn weights depending on your desired look. Lighter yarns create a softer, more delicate scrunchie, while heavier yarns give a fuller, more structured result. I chose a lightweight cotton yarn because I love the fabric’s drape. Light and fluffy!
Do I need a specific type of elastic?
🧶 A standard hair elastic works perfectly. Choose one that feels comfortable and has good stretch for the best results.
Can I sell scrunchies made from this pattern?
🧶 Of course! Handmade scrunchies made using this pattern are great for craft fairs and small-shop sales. How cute are these with their printable tags?! (The tags can only be found in the full PDF in my pattern shops.)

Rows 3-50:
Repeat Row 2. Fasten off, leaving a long tail.
Seaming
Insert the elastic hair tie along the length of the scrunchie fabric, starting at one corner, and continue folding the long ends together around the elastic as you go. Seam the long edges together using your preferred method (or use a crochet hook to slip stitch them together).
Next, align the short ends and, using a yarn needle and the long tail, seam the open ends together to form a continuous ring; see video. Fasten off.
Not Just for Hair
These scrunchies aren’t just for ponytails. You can also:
🧶Wear one on your wrist as a soft, everyday accessory
🧶Use it to bundle yarn or small items
🧶Add it as a decorative accent to gift wrapping
🧶Use it as a gentle tie for delicate fabrics

Finishing
Weave in all ends securely, then give your scrunchie a gentle stretch to help the gathers settle evenly around the elastic. Once it’s fluffed into shape, it’s ready to wear or gift.
