Construction

The Wheat Stitch™ Crochet Earwarmer Pattern worked flat in rows, making the construction simple, intuitive, and beginner-friendly.

We’ll begin by crocheting the length first to ensure a comfortable fit around the head. From there, the width is created through the repeating Wheat Stitch™ pattern.

Once the earwarmer reaches the desired length, the short ends are brought together and joined using a clever “C” style seam. This finishing technique creates the look of a chic front twist without actually twisting the fabric. The result is a clean, modern finish that sits comfortably on the forehead with minimal bulk.

If crocheted earwarmers are your jam, you’ll also love the Twisted Wheat Stitch™ Earwarmer, Autumn Wheat Earwarmer, and the Easy Headband Earwarmer!

Special Stitches

Puff Stitch: Yarn over and insert your hook into the stitch/space. Yarn over again and pull up a long loop. Yarn over and insert your hook into the same stitch/space. Yarn over again and pull up a long loop (5 loops on the hook). Yarn over and pull through the first 4 loops, yarn over and pull through remaining loops.

Pattern Notes

  • The chain 1 at the beginning of the row does not count as a stitch.
  • To make a thicker earwarmer, add an additional 4 rows in the stitch pattern.
  • For striping, work every two sc rows in one color, and every 2 puff st rows in a different color. Change colors by yarning over with the new color when making the last stitch of the row before your new color begins. Keep both colors attached and carry the unused yarn up the inside of the earwarmer without fastening off.
  • Work the first row of stitches in the back humps of the starting chain.
  • The instructions and stitch counts are given for the smallest size, with the larger sizes in brackets ( ).
  • Before you dive into your project, take a moment to identify the stitch and row counts that match the size you’re making. By highlighting or marking them, you’ll save time and effort later on. Trust us, this small step will make a big difference in your knitting or crochet journey!

Hands holding a crocheted piece with pastel blue and white yarn, surrounded by yarn balls, lavender sprigs, and a lit candle on a white surface.

Quick Tip!

If using two colors, don’t fasten off ends between colors. Simply carry the yarn up on the inside. Fewer ends to weave in!

Joining the Ends

We are going to do a seam that creates the twist in the earwarmer. While this fabric is reversible, start by laying the earwarmer in front of you with the right side facing.

Then, in your left hand, create a ‘C’ with the left end side of the earwarmer. With your right hand, create a backward ‘C’ with the right side of the earwarmer.

Now join the ‘C’ shapes together.

Next, using your tapestry needle, seam through all earwarmer edge layers, securing tightly. Once seamed, weave in the end, then flip inside out.

Six knitted headbands in various shades of purple, blue, and teal are displayed on a white surface with lavender, a candle, and two hands holding one headband.
